This is called paper scoring. It is basically a ridge added on the paper where the fold is intended to occur. It is generally made using a straight blunt object made out of metal. It creates a hinge that allows the paper to be folded easily.
Paper scoring helps improve the appearance of the paper as it no longer has uneven cracks along its fold. It also helps the paper last longer as the crease is consistent. Scoring works great when used with thicker card stock. For a thin paper, scoring is not required and a normal fold will do.
Inline and Offline Scoring
There are two ways to perform scoring operations. You can either do it while the printing operation is being carried out (inline scoring) or it can be performed separately after the printing process is complete (offline scoring). The basic difference here is that offline scoring often produces better, more desirable results and is perfect for short runs. But if you have a lager quantity to print, inline scoring is advisable.
